Mark Gerald Jerry Levitoff, 53, a U.S. Forest Service employee, was murdered on January 19, 2000, near his favored fishing spot on the west shore of Lake Almanor, California. His body was found in a mound of snow about 90 yards from his pickup truck on January 22, 2000. He had been shot in the head with a shotgun and also had a gunshot wound to the hand, suggesting a defensive injury. His wallet was missing; the truck’s hood was up with jumper cables attached to the battery. Used shotgun shells and an embossed H logo from a Honda were recovered at the scene.

Detectives traced use of Levitoff’s credit card to a battery purchase in Elko, Nevada, and followed movements into California, Nevada and Utah to a campsite near the Wyoming border. There officers arrested Rain Dancer Dickey-O’Brien in possession of Levitoff’s credit card and a shotgun that matched the shells found at the scene; the H logo from O’Brien’s Honda was reportedly missing. O’Brien reportedly admitted to shooting Levitoff, saying Levitoff had stopped to help with a battery problem and that he later ordered Levitoff to stand against a tree before shooting him. O’Brien pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and faced charges including murder, possession of stolen property, grand theft and armed robbery.

Does anyone have additional information about Levitoff’s last movements that could shed light on what happened that day?
