Shayne Daniel York was a 26-year-old Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed after being shot in the back of the head during an armed robbery at the De’Cut Hair Salon in Buena Park, California. The attack occurred while he and his fiancée, also a deputy, were off duty and had been ordered to lie face down; York was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and died of his injuries on August 16, 1997.
Two suspects, Andre Willis and Kevin Boyce, were arrested after a witness described their getaway car and Fullerton Police stopped them. Both men had prior convictions and were on parole at the time. Investigators determined Boyce fired the fatal shot; Boyce was later convicted of first-degree murder with special circumstances and sentenced to death, and Willis received life without parole.
Thousands attended York’s funeral, including high-ranking officials and fellow officers who paid tribute to him.
