On October 26, 1997, four-year-old Matthew Dylan Eubanks of San Marcos, California, died after being shot in the head in his family home. Matthew and his three brothers — Brandon Armstrong, 14; Austin Eubanks, 7; and Brigham Eubanks, 6 — were all found with gunshot wounds to the head. Their mother, Susan Eubanks, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach and was found at the scene; Matthew succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The killings came amid a period of personal turmoil for Susan Eubanks. She was divorcing her husband, Eric Eubanks, and had been involved in a turbulent relationship with boyfriend Rene Dodson. On the day of the shootings Susan and Rene argued at a bar, the argument continued at home, Rene left, and Susan left a voicemail for Eric saying, Say goodbye.
Susan Eubanks was arrested and charged in the deaths. By 1999 she had been convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death; the California Supreme Court later upheld that conviction and sentence. What details about motive or the family’s life leading up to October 26 remain unclear to the public?
