Michael Frederick Clark, 28, was fatally shot on August 4, 1995, while responding to a welfare check on a suicidal man at a residence on Aztec Court in Simi Valley. Clark, a former LAPD officer who was then serving with the Simi Valley Police Department, was struck when the distressed individual opened fire during the encounter.

The shooter, identified as Daniel Tuffree, was wounded by other officers and taken into custody at the scene. He was later convicted of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon in January 1997 and sentenced to 54 years to life. Reports note Tuffree had a history of psychological problems and substance abuse.

Clark’s death deeply affected the Simi Valley community; thousands attended his funeral. In August 2016 the Highway 118 First Street overpass was renamed the Simi Valley Police Officer Michael Clark Memorial Overcrossing in his honor.

If anyone knew Officer Clark, the events that night, or the residence on Aztec Court, please share information that might add detail to the record.
