On August 1, 1995, 16-year-old Ben Liao of San Gabriel, California was killed in a drive-by shooting on the I-10 freeway near San Gabriel. Ben was riding with Cheng Peng and Paul Vu when occupants of another vehicle, members of the Asian Boyz gang, opened fire after reportedly mistaking the three for members of a rival Taiwanese-based gang. All three victims died at the scene.

Investigators traced the attack to a wider pattern of violent crimes by the Asian Boyz in Los Angeles County during the 1990s, including multiple drive-by shootings, home invasions and other deadly assaults. Two brothers, Marvin and Pierre Mercado, were later captured in the Philippines, extradited to the United States and convicted for roles in multiple murders tied to the gang; their sentences included multiple life terms for murders that included the killing of Ben Liao.
