Cheng Peng was 18 and from San Gabriel, California, when he was killed on August 1, 1995. He was one of several victims targeted during a violent crime spree by members of the Asian Boyz gang in the San Gabriel Valley; police say he, Paul Vu, and Ben Liao were mistakenly identified as members of a rival Taiwanese-based gang and were killed as a result.
Investigators tied the murders to Marvin and Pierre Mercado, who were described as key figures in the Asian Boyz and whose actions were linked to multiple murders, attempted murders, and other violent crimes in the area. The Mercado brothers fled to the Philippines before being apprehended and returned to the United States for prosecution. Marvin Mercado, known as Shy Boy, and Pierre Mercado were convicted in connection with these killings; sentencing reflected convictions for multiple murders and related felonies.
If anyone knew Cheng Peng, Paul Vu, Ben Liao, or has information about the gang violence in the San Gabriel Valley in 1995, please share what you know.
