William Francis McLaughlin, 55, was shot to death in his Newport Beach home on December 15, 1994. An inventor and wealthy businessman who developed a device to separate plasma from blood, McLaughlin was found in his kitchen after being shot six times with a 9mm handgun. Nothing of value appeared to have been taken, and investigators described the scene as pointing to a personal motive.
McLaughlin had recently become engaged to 28-year-old Nanette Johnston, who was named beneficiary of his life insurance and included in his will. Johnston was having an affair with former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki. Investigators concluded Johnston and Naposki conspired to kill McLaughlin; court testimony described Naposki entering McLaughlin’s home with a key and firing the fatal shots.
Both Naposki and Johnston were arrested, tried, and convicted; each was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Did anyone who knew McLaughlin, Johnston, or Naposki notice anything out of the ordinary in Newport Beach in the weeks before December 15, 1994?
