Alicia Allen, a pregnant woman from Gardena, California, was murdered on August 9, 1994. She was found in her home on West Marine Avenue, lying facedown on her bed with her hands tied behind her back and having been shot twice in the head; both she and her 17-week-old fetus were pronounced dead at the scene. The scene showed signs of a violent struggle and a robbery, with keys scattered on the floor and a key box open.
Investigators focused on Maurice Lydell Harris, who was tried for the killings and for the earlier shooting of Alicia’s fiancé, Bernard Canto, who had been shot near his van parked in front of Harris’s apartment complex. Police located blood and shell casings near Canto’s van and recovered a bloody shirt and shorts containing Canto’s belongings. The jury convicted Harris on counts including murder, robbery, and burglary, found he personally used a firearm and inflicted great bodily injury in the attempted murder of Canto, and returned a death sentence for Alicia’s murder and life without parole for the death of her fetus; the California Supreme Court later affirmed the death sentence.
Does anyone have information about Alicia’s life in Gardena or details from that night that could add context to what happened?
