David Hang was 14 and from San Marino, California, when he was killed on June 6, 1994. He died at a graduation party that was fired on after a group of assailants, reportedly believing rival gang members were present, opened fire. Another teenager, Dennis Buan, was also killed and several people were wounded.
Investigators tied the attack to a retaliatory motive stemming from a gang-related killing about six months earlier. The probe led to the arrest and conviction of Cuong Phan and three other defendants, including the two men who carried out the shooting. Defendants challenged jury selection on racial discrimination grounds, but appellate courts — including the California Supreme Court — upheld the convictions, finding race-neutral reasons for juror exclusions.
The case went through multiple levels of review and the convictions were repeatedly affirmed. Does anyone have memories of the San Marino area in 1994 or information about the people who attended that graduation party?
