Dennis Buan was 18 and from San Marino, California, when he was killed on June 6, 1994. The death occurred during a graduation party that erupted in violence; a shooting at the event also killed 15-year-old David Hang and wounded several others. Investigators concluded the attack was a retaliatory act by members of an Asian gang who believed a rival gang was at the party.
The investigation produced arrests and convictions. Cuong Phan and three other defendants were found guilty; Phan and the two identified gunmen were convicted of murder. Prosecutors said the shooting was retaliation for a gang-related killing six months earlier. Defense challenges to the jury-selection process alleging racial discrimination were rejected by appellate courts, which accepted the prosecution’s race-neutral reasons for juror dismissals.
Anyone who remembers the graduation party, knew Dennis, or has information about the case is asked to come forward.
