Officer Martin L. Ganz, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who had served with the Manhattan Beach Police Department for five years, was killed during a traffic stop on December 27, 1993. At about 11:15 PM, Ganz signaled a vehicle to pull over near the Manhattan Village shopping mall while accompanied by his 13-year-old cousin. As Ganz approached the car the driver opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon; Ganz was struck multiple times, two rounds penetrating his vest. He was taken to a nearby hospital and died shortly afterward. The cousin was unharmed when the assailant’s gun jammed as he tried to shoot him.

Investigators collected shell casings, reviewed surveillance footage, and interviewed witnesses, including the cousin and a passerby, Jennifer La Fond, who gave descriptions of the attacker. An anonymous tip later pointed to Roger Hoan Brady, and investigators linked Brady to another murder in Oregon; he was arrested about eight months after Ganz’s death. Brady was convicted for Ganz’s murder; in December 1998 he was sentenced to death and received a life term without parole for the Oregon killing. Ganz was survived by his fiancée, mother, and five sisters.

Did anyone in the Manhattan Beach area at the time have memories or details about the traffic stop or the suspect that could add to the record?
