Walter Leroy Harper, 65, and his wife Carrlene Harper were shot to death on August 31, 1993, at the Borrego Springs home of a longtime friend. Walter, a San Diego native, had retired from the family-owned QRS sign company. The couple were remembered as fun-loving and purposeful and were honored by nearly 500 people at a memorial service in La Jolla.
Investigators classified the deaths as a double homicide. The case drew significant attention and an extensive local law enforcement investigation, but motive and the identity of the perpetrator or perpetrators were not clear at the time. Over the years there were developments including identification of potential suspects and pursuit of leads, but the investigation faced challenges such as a lack of concrete evidence.
The Harpers’ deaths deeply affected the Borrego Springs community and left family and friends seeking answers. If anyone knew Walter or Carrlene, or has information about that night in Borrego Springs, please come forward.
