On November 25, 1992, 22-year-old Jose Aragon was killed in San Timoteo Canyon, Riverside County, California. Aragon had been practicing motorcycle stunts when he was approached by Orlando Gene Romero, Christopher Self, and an accomplice named Jose Munoz. After Aragon demonstrated some stunts, Christopher Self shot him; Orlando Romero then picked Aragon up and taunted him, asking how it felt to be shot.
The killing of Aragon was one episode in a broader crime spree by Romero and Self from October to December 1992 that included the murders of Joey Mans and Timothy Jones, plus multiple attempted murders, robberies, kidnappings and other felonies across western Riverside County. Romero and Self were tried and convicted of first-degree murder for Aragon, Mans and Jones and of numerous related felonies; in 1996 both were sentenced to death, and the California Supreme Court later reviewed aspects of the convictions and sentences.
Does anyone have memories of San Timoteo Canyon in late 1992 or information about Jose Aragon that could help provide more context about that day?
