John Sheehy was a 22-year-old student killed on September 27, 1990, during a hostage situation at Henry’s Pub in Berkeley, California. Mehrdad Dashti, 29 and reported to have schizophrenia, entered the pub armed with three pistols and 445 rounds of ammunition and took 33 people hostage. Over about seven hours Dashti issued irrational demands and terrorized the captives before opening fire; Sheehy was shot in the chest at close range and died. Police ended the siege by storming the pub and exchanged gunfire; Dashti was killed. Six students and one police officer were also wounded by gunfire.
Reports say there were no other suspects or arrests, and that discussion afterward focused on failures in mental health care and the risks when someone with severe mental illness has access to firearms. If anyone remembers Henry’s Pub that night or has information about John Sheehy, please share what you know.
