Julie McGhee, 29, was murdered July 17, 1988, in Cathedral City, California. According to court records and the killer’s confession, she was picked up in an area known for prostitution, driven to a remote construction site in the desert, and after sexual activity was ordered from the car and shot in the head. Her body was found stripped of identification in a remote desert area; cartridge cases from a .45-caliber handgun were recovered nearby.

McGhee’s death was initially treated as an isolated killing until similar victims appeared. Ballistics tied the same gun to at least two other victims, and the pattern eventually led investigators to link the cases to Andrew Urdiales through DNA and his confessions. Urdiales later was convicted of multiple murders, including McGhee’s, and sentenced to death.
