Glenda Lynn Moritz, 27, was one of seven people killed on February 16, 1988, when a former ESL Inc. employee carried out a mass shooting at the company’s Sunnyvale, California, offices. The attacker had been terminated in 1986 after repeatedly stalking and harassing a co-worker, Laura Black, and returned to the building armed with multiple firearms, including a shotgun. He roamed the halls for several hours, firing at people; several others were wounded before police apprehended him after a standoff.
The shooter was later charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and related offenses. At trial the jury found him guilty on all counts and he was sentenced to death. The killings prompted public discussion about workplace safety and how stalking and harassment are handled.
