Douglas Milan Doug Arthur, 44, was killed on December 7, 1987, when Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771 was hijacked and deliberately crashed near Cayucos, California. Arthur, the airline’s Chief Pilot, was traveling off-duty as a passenger on the Los Angeles–San Francisco flight. The hijacker, identified as David Burke, a recently terminated former USAir employee, smuggled a .44 Magnum revolver on board and shot the pilots and crew before forcing the aircraft into a fatal dive.
During the attack Arthur left his seat and attempted to reach the cockpit in an effort to stop the hijacking. Those efforts failed and all 43 people on board were killed, including the hijacker, who also died in the crash. The incident exposed how a weapon had been brought on board and became a catalyst for changes in airline security.
Did anyone who knew Doug Arthur or was on that route in 1987 save memories or details that could add to his story?
