Douglas Michael Metal, 23, was shot dead on November 4, 1984, while working at a drive‑in dairy in Garden Grove, California. The killing was one of four homicides attributed to Teofilo Medina Jr., whose several‑week crime spree beginning in October 1984 targeted convenience stores and gas stations in Orange and Riverside counties.

Medina’s robberies reportedly took in less than $450 total. Other victims named in the series were Horacio Ariza Jr., 20; Victor Rea, 20; and Craig Martin, 18. After his arrest Medina was charged with multiple counts of first‑degree murder and other offenses; his defense raised claims of severe mental illness but a jury found him legally sane and convicted him.
