Henry Liu, also known by his pen name Chiang Nan, was a Taiwanese-American writer and journalist who was assassinated on October 15, 1984, in the garage of his Daly City, California, home. Liu had written an unauthorized biography of Chiang Ching-kuo and was a vocal critic of the Kuomintang; his murder has been described as politically motivated and linked to efforts to silence his criticism.
On the morning of the killing Liu’s wife, Helen, saw two Asian men on bicycles near the house and then heard loud noises from the garage; she found her husband shot. Investigators tied the killing to members of the Bamboo Union, a Taiwanese gang, and to Taiwan’s military intelligence. Tung Kuei-sen later admitted to shooting Liu at trial, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 27 years to life, claiming he’d been following orders. Other suspects, including David Yu, were identified; Yu was arrested and released for lack of evidence, while three additional Bamboo Union members were believed to have fled to Taiwan.
Are there readers who knew Henry Liu or have information about the other suspects and their movements before October 15, 1984?
