Edith Elouise Shaffer, 62, and her husband Benjamin Shaffer were murdered while visiting Mendocino County. They were residents of Yuma, Arizona and were killed on July 1, 1982, in Manchester, California. Their bodies were not discovered until December 1983, meaning the couple’s deaths went unnoticed for many months.
Investigators determined the Shaffers had been robbed before they were killed and that the scene showed signs of a violent struggle. The murders were later linked to a serial killer, and the case eventually produced substantial evidence tying a suspect to multiple killings. The legal process that followed addressed the murders and the broader pattern of offenses associated with the suspect.
If anyone knew the Shaffers, saw them during their visit to Mendocino County in 1982, or has information about their whereabouts between July 1, 1982 and December 1983, please come forward.
