Clark Randall Stephens was 26 when he was murdered on May 17, 1982, in Garberville, California. His body was found in a shallow grave in the remote, rugged area of Humboldt County later referred to as Murder Mountain.
Authorities say Michael and Susan Carson, known as the San Francisco Witch Killers, targeted people they believed practiced witchcraft; Stephens was killed because the Carsons thought he was a witch. The discovery prompted an extensive investigation that led to the Carsons’ arrest and prosecution on multiple murder charges. Both were convicted and given lengthy prison terms.
The case left a lasting impact on the Garberville area and is remembered alongside other violent incidents on Murder Mountain. Does anyone have information about Clark Stephens or memories of him from the Garberville community?
