On the evening of December 28, 1981, Jay Hunter and his wife Ruth Hunter were shot to death in the bedroom of their Pacifica, California, home. Investigators later determined the couple had been killed by their son, Michael Wayne Hunter. Reported grievances cited by Michael included an earlier incident in which Ruth had reported him for breaking into the home while the parents were on vacation and disputes over the handling of his natural mother’s will that he believed had deprived him of an inheritance.
In the weeks before the killings, Michael reportedly told a friend, Thomas Henkemeyer, that he planned to kill his parents and discussed ways to create alibis and how to transport and conceal a rifle or shotgun. On the night of the murders, neighbors heard gunshots and another witness encountered a man matching Michael’s description near the scene carrying a shotgun. The bodies were found December 29 after police were called about an open front door and a broken window; Jay was on the bed and Ruth was against a wall with the telephone receiver nearby.
Does anyone have information about the Hunters, the neighborhood in Pacifica at that time, or contacts who knew Michael, Jay or Ruth?
