Sergeant George Leon Garrett Jr., 39, of the Redwood City Police Department was shot and killed on May 8, 1981, during a robbery at a Bank of America branch in Redwood City, California. He and three other plainclothes officers had responded to a silent alarm; Garrett, not in uniform, identified himself to the bank manager and was immediately shot by a suspect who was standing nearby. Responding officers returned fire, killing one suspect; the surviving suspect was arrested and charged in connection with the robbery and Garrett’s murder. One plainclothes officer was also wounded after being mistaken for a suspect by patrol officers during the encounter.
Garrett had served with the department for ten years. The community later dedicated the George L. Garrett Junior Memorial Park in his honor. Are there readers who remember that bank, the response that day, or who have information about the case?
