Al Mills, his wife Jeannie, and their daughter Daphene were shot to death on February 26, 1980, in their Berkeley, California home. The family had defected from the Peoples Temple and become outspoken critics of the group, which prompted early speculation their killings were retaliatory. Investigators later focused on the Mills’ 17-year-old son Eddie, who was in the house and said he did not hear the shootings. The three victims were found shot execution-style with a .22-caliber weapon; Al and Jeannie were killed immediately and Daphene died two days later in hospital.

Gunshot residue was reportedly found on Eddie’s hands, but he was not arrested at the time and the investigation went cold. In 2005 Eddie was detained when he arrived at San Francisco International Airport after living in Japan; he was charged but the Alameda County District Attorney declined to file charges, citing insufficient evidence. Eddie denies involvement and the case remains officially unsolved.
