Sergeant Darlon Clint Dowell, 32, of the Ventura Police Department was killed on August 7, 1978, during a high-risk raid on a Ventura residence. The operation followed an attempted robbery the previous day at a Bank of America on Victoria Avenue; officers had tracked two armed suspects to the house. According to reports, the first suspect answered and stalled at the door while the second armed himself with a shotgun. Dowell was the third officer to enter and was ambushed, struck in the back as he tried to dive for cover. He died at the scene; the shooter attempted to flee through a rear door and was later shot and killed by an officer outside the house.

The department retired Dowell’s badge number and his name was added to memorials. The death prompted an internal review of raid procedures and brought visible community support for his wife, two young children, parents, sister and brother. What details about the raid or the suspects remain unclear to readers who followed this case?
