Field Supervisor Steven Laurence Armenta, 43, was killed following an undercover narcotics operation in Benicia, California. On December 5, 1973, Armenta and other agents completed a cocaine purchase and moved to arrest the suspects. One suspect opened fire during the attempted arrests; Armenta was mortally wounded and died in a Sacramento hospital on December 7, 1973. He was survived by his wife and two children.
The shooter was arrested and later convicted. On August 27, 1974, the 21-year-old defendant was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and three counts of selling cocaine and received four concurrent terms of five years to life.
Anyone with memories of Armenta, the operation, or the Benicia area in December 1973 is asked to share information that might add context to this case.
