Frances Rose was 28 and a student at the University of California Extension in San Francisco when she was shot to death on October 30, 1973. She had attended an evening class and was killed just outside the campus gates; a witness saw a man in the passenger seat of her car shoot her multiple times before fleeing. That man was later identified as Jesse Lee Cooks.

Rose’s murder was one of the early killings in the series known as the Zebra murders, a string of racially motivated attacks in San Francisco between 1973 and 1974 that resulted in at least 15 deaths and eight wounded. The four perpetrators, who called themselves the Death Angels, were arrested in 1974; the case involved testimony from a warehouse worker who was granted immunity and entered witness protection. Jesse Lee Cooks was convicted and imprisoned on first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.

Does anyone have memories of Frances Rose, details about that night, or information that could add to the record?
