Eighteen-year-old Trevaj Cheek of Atlantic Beach was shot and killed on August 14, 2022, at an apartment complex on Orchid Street. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived after an early-morning call and found Cheek with at least one gunshot wound; he was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Ring camera footage shows police at the scene.

Investigators say Cheek was involved in a confrontation after his girlfriend and another woman left a house party with three men. Those men grew suspicious when the girlfriend did not answer repeated calls. When Cheek drove up to the complex with his lights off, allegedly stepped out and pointed a gun at the SUV containing the men, one of the teens in the SUV fired, striking and killing Cheek. The shooter retained an attorney, and his mother handed the handgun to investigators. The Sheriff’s Office ruled the death a justifiable homicide, saying Cheek was shot during the commission of a crime; the State Attorney’s Office is still reviewing the matter.

Was anyone at the apartment complex or nearby business aware of earlier tensions that night and willing to share what they saw or heard?
