Jorge Romero-Gil, a 67-year-old Coral Gables resident, was fatally shot on July 22, 2022, while working a maintenance job near the 10 Aragon Condominium building. Witnesses say he was picking up trash by the loading dock when a vehicle arrived and an argument began. Two teenagers, 18-year-old Gary Ragin and a 17-year-old minor, got out; Ragin allegedly pointed a Glock and demanded property. Romero-Gil handed over an envelope of cash, but the 17-year-old grabbed the gun, shot Romero-Gil in the chest, and took his wallet as he lay dying.
The suspects fled in a stolen Dodge Caliber and were pursued by police after a Coral Gables officer spotted the vehicle. The car crashed at Tigertail Avenue and Darwin Street; both suspects ran but were caught after a perimeter was set. Authorities charged Gary Ragin and Jermaine Walker with first-degree murder and armed grand theft auto, and prosecutors are seeking to charge the minor as an adult.
Romero-Gil, originally from Colombia, was remembered by family as a dedicated, loving father who worked to bring his family to the United States; his family has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses. If anyone has information about Romero-Gil or the events that evening, please share what is known with investigators.
