Jonathan Simmons, 43, was fatally shot at his home in Jay, Florida, on May 28, 2022. According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, the shooter was his 16-year-old son, Jaden Simmons. The shooting followed a heated argument in the living room; Jaden reportedly walked away, his father followed, the verbal confrontation continued, and Jaden retrieved a shotgun loaded with buckshot and shot Jonathan in the chest. Jonathan Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors described a strained father‑son relationship; reports note Jonathan had a criminal record with multiple charges and had been recently released from jail. Sheriff Bob Johnson said the incident did not meet Stand Your Ground criteria because Jaden had an opportunity to leave and Jonathan was unarmed. Jaden was arrested and charged with second‑degree murder, initially booked as a juvenile and expected to be charged as an adult. Some community members have raised questions about possible past trauma and the role of mental health support.
Are there readers who knew the Simmons family or who can share information about the relationship dynamics in Jay leading up to this incident?
