Franklyn Jose Pineyro, 49, was shot and killed on February 5, 2022, at a Publix supermarket in Coral Gables, Florida. The shooting occurred around 6:15 PM while Pineyro was standing in line to buy lottery tickets after an argument with another customer, 51-year-old Osmel Lugo-Gutierrez. Surveillance footage and witnesses show Pineyro lunging toward Lugo-Gutierrez immediately before Lugo-Gutierrez produced a 9mm handgun and shot Pineyro in the chest; Pineyro died at the scene. Witnesses and the video are consistent that Pineyro was unarmed when he was shot.
Lugo-Gutierrez was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder; he is being held without bond while the Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Unit continues its investigation. Pineyro’s family has described him as a devoted father and husband, and the shooting has drawn attention because it began over a seemingly minor dispute in a public place. Does anyone have more information about Pineyro’s last movements or about witnesses who were at the store that evening?
