Richard William Dye, 57, was fatally shot on November 18, 2021, at about 6:00 PM at a gas station on Highway 87 in Navarre, Florida. Deputies found Dye dead at the scene after responding to reports of a shooting. Surveillance footage and witness statements played a central role in the investigation.

The shooter was identified as James McCullar, 25, who had gone to the station to pick up his son, Dye’s grandson. A heated argument reportedly erupted after McCullar said he intended to take the child to Tennessee and Dye opposed it. Video reportedly shows Dye approaching McCullar’s vehicle and yanking the door open; Dye was unarmed when he was shot. Sheriff Bob Johnson said evidence supported McCullar’s account that he acted in self-defense, and the matter was being reviewed under Florida’s stand your ground law with charging decisions left to the Assistant State Attorney.
