Aaron Eugene Goin was 19 when he boarded the 60-foot crab fishing vessel F/V Hellion out of Dutch Harbor in autumn 1979. On November 22 the Hellion, captained by owner Ronald Hoffman and carrying crewmember Walter Laughead, left port to retrieve crab pots and move them to Beaver Inlet for winter storage.
The next day a severe storm struck the Bering Sea with winds reported up to 70 knots and 20-foot seas. Communication with the Hellion was lost and the vessel was last known to be near Unimak Pass. After the storm neither the Hellion nor Aaron Goin, Hoffman, or Laughead were ever found; no wreckage or debris was recovered and the official status is listed as Missing from F/V Hellion.
If anyone has memories of the Hellion, its last voyage, or information about that area during the November 1979 storm, please share what is known.
