On the evening of June 25, 2021, about 50 to 100 people had gathered near the end of Columbia Lane in West Melbourne, Florida, when an argument began over a spilled drink. Nineteen-year-old Andre Hutchinas, a recent Melbourne High School graduate and former football player, intervened after 26-year-old Gregory Stefan Alan Barr II allegedly brandished a knife and placed it against another person’s throat. Barr reportedly then turned the knife on Hutchinas; Hutchinas evaded the blade and punched Barr in what has been described as self-defense. Barr pulled a Glock 19 9mm from his waistband and shot Hutchinas once in the neck. Hutchinas was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead.
Barr surrendered when police arrived and admitted to the shooting during an interview. He was charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; his defense later requested a court-ordered competency evaluation, citing a head injury and brain bleed that allegedly developed after the incident. Hutchinas’s family and teammates remembered him as a gentle giant with an infectious smile, and a vigil was held at Melbourne High School; a GoFundMe was set up to help with funeral expenses.
Did anyone at the gathering or nearby see what happened before the confrontation escalated?
