Justin Jamal Jackson, a 31-year-old Black man, was shot and killed on April 23, 2021, in Miami Gardens, Florida. The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. after Jackson and friends left a local club. As their car exited the parking lot it was followed by another vehicle; when Jackson’s car reached Northwest 177th Street and Northwest 2nd Avenue the occupants of the trailing vehicle opened fire. Jackson was struck in the back and his vehicle was riddled with bullets. More than 30 shell casings were recovered at the scene. He was taken to a hospital by the Miami-Dade Fire Department but died of his injuries.

Jackson’s mother, Laytena Jackson, said he rarely went out because he had lupus and that he had simply decided to enjoy a night with friends. Investigators later found that another car with two children inside had been struck during the shooting. Nearly two years after the killing, 21-year-old Johnathan Antoine was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder; authorities say a rented luxury car used in the shooting was tracked to the scene via GPS. Antoine is being held without bond and a court appearance is scheduled.

Anyone who was at the club or the intersection that night or who has other information is asked to contact the Miami Gardens Police Department.
