On October 3, 1977, 28-year-old Ronald Raymond Leone and 17-year-old Rudy Baronet left Leone’s family home in Johnston, Rhode Island to visit a friend and were never seen again. Leone was described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches, 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes and a lion’s head tattoo on his right arm; he was last seen wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt. Leone’s mother reported him missing to the Johnston Police Department that same evening.
Investigators identified Anthony Parrillo, a known mob associate, as central to the case after his girlfriend testified she saw both young men’s bodies in Parrillo’s Providence apartment on the day they disappeared and described Parrillo and a roommate packing the bodies into sleeping bags and removing them. Parrillo was convicted in 1982 without the victims’ bodies having been found; that conviction was overturned in 1984. Facing a second trial in January 1986, Parrillo pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and received a 30-year sentence; he was later paroled. The bodies of Leone and Baronet have never been recovered and the Johnston Police Department continues to list the disappearances as an open, endangered missing person investigation.
