A property dispute on a shared 40-acre family tract in Christmas, Florida, turned fatal on March 12, 2021. Thirty-year-old Billy Nobles, who lived on the land with his wife, was operating a backhoe building a driveway near the home of Juanita and Ralph Christie Jr. Tensions over boundaries and tree removal had been ongoing among family members since the parcel was inherited in 2016.

According to the Christies, Juanita became entangled in vines and was run over by the tractor, leading Ralph, 69, to retrieve a rifle and shoot Nobles once. Investigators later recovered a 23-minute video from Nobles’ cellphone that reportedly shows Juanita leaning against the tractor and blocking its path while Nobles asked her to move, then stepping aside before Ralph fired from about 15 feet away. Nobles can be heard after the shot expressing pain and concern for his children.

Ralph Christie Jr. was arrested and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm; his attorney has said he acted in self-defense fearing for his wife’s life.
