Adam McQuaig, 37, of Summerfield, Florida, was found dead inside a home in the 3200 block of Southeast 148th Place on September 8, 2020. Deputies responded to a report of a deceased person and early accounts said McQuaig had been shot; authorities did not release the number or location of the wounds. Investigators concluded the shooting was not random, indicating McQuaig likely knew his attacker.
Fruitland Park resident Daniel Lee Gilbert was identified as a suspect. Detectives say Gilbert shot McQuaig in the head during an altercation at the Summerfield residence that began over a dispute about a deal involving a gun and a laptop. Witnesses described an argument that escalated after Gilbert refused to give McQuaig a ride; detectives found no evidence the meeting was a setup.
Gilbert was arrested October 2, 2020, in Bushnell and was found with a small amount of methamphetamine. He was initially held in Sumter County before transfer to the Marion County Jail, denied bail at his first court appearance and informed he faced life in prison if convicted. Gilbert maintained the shooting was self-defense and gave differing accounts to others, but investigators say the evidence pointed to him as the perpetrator.
Does anyone have information about contacts between McQuaig and Gilbert or about the alleged gun-and-laptop deal?
