Joaquin Ramon Perez, 60, was shot and killed on May 5, 2020, at his home on Marsh Harbor Drive in Tavares, Florida. A military veteran who later worked as a corrections officer, Perez had lived in Lake County since 1981 and was remembered by family and neighbors for his dedication to helping children and his jovial, caring nature.

Police say the fatal shooting occurred during a domestic dispute with Perez’s 32-year-old son, Matthew Perez. According to reports, an argument developed over a gate lock and whether Joaquin could invite his daughter to the home. Matthew, who had been living with his father, called 911 after the shooting, confessed to the act, and told investigators he felt threatened but did not describe specific threats. Matthew was arrested and charged with premeditated first-degree murder and held without bond; an arraignment was set for June 1, 2020.

The family created an online memorial directing donations to Joaquin’s daughter, Christina Perez. Does anyone have information about Joaquin’s life in Lake County or details about the days leading up to May 5, 2020?
