Traci Nicole Hamby, 37, of Leesburg, Florida, was found dead in the mobile home she shared with her boyfriend on February 13, 2020. She died of a gunshot wound in the residence on the 33000 block of Filmore Road in Bassville Park. Her boyfriend, Renee Aviles, called 911 saying he had accidentally shot her after she barged into the room where he was trying to sleep; during the call he attempted first aid while reporting she was turning blue. Traci was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aviles was arrested and charged with domestic manslaughter with a firearm. At trial he said Hamby had come at him in a rage and he acted in self-defense; the defense pointed to methamphetamine in Hamby’s system and prior threats with knives and a frying pan. The prosecution maintained Hamby was unarmed, dressed in pajamas and not an imminent threat. A jury found Aviles guilty of domestic manslaughter with a firearm.
