Lucious Lou Harris, a 72-year-old African American boxing trainer and mentor, was shot and killed in his Ocoee, Florida home in the Lake Florence subdivision on February 22, 2019. Deputies responded to a 911 call about 7:10 a.m. and found Harris suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigators arrested Harris’s 31-year-old grandson, Lucien Harris, later the same day and charged him with first-degree murder. Family members described Lucien as having a history of mental health problems, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, for which he was not receiving treatment, and said jealousy and resentment toward his grandfather and other fighters were cited as contributing factors. Lucien’s record included prior arrests going back to 2004, and an October 2018 arrest for threatening to kill his uncle with a hammer and knife.
Harris was well known in the boxing community for mentoring young fighters and his death drew widespread grief. Does anyone have information about Lucious Harris, his work in the community, or events in Ocoee around February 22, 2019?
