Margaret Anne Wade Amato, 61, was one of three family members found shot to death in the family home in Oviedo, Florida, on January 25, 2019. Her husband Chad Amato and their son Cody Amato were also found dead from fatal gunshot wounds. A welfare check after Cody missed work led to the discovery and an intensive Seminole County Sheriff’s Office investigation.

Investigators focused on the couple’s surviving son, Grant Amato. The case record describes a fraught family dynamic tied to Grant’s addiction to an online relationship with a Bulgarian woman and to his taking about $200,000 from the family to send to her. Grant had been in a rehab program for internet and sex addiction and was reportedly kicked out of the home the night before the killings. He was later arrested at a local hotel and charged with three counts of first-degree murder; a jury found him guilty and he was sentenced to life without parole.
