James Costello, 68, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, was shot and killed at his home on Lonesome Pine Lane in the early hours of November 13, 2018. Police reports say the shooting followed an argument with his 25-year-old son, Evan James Costello, that escalated after Evan’s dog ingested one of James’s medications. After a visit to the veterinarian, tensions rose and, according to reports, Evan retrieved a handgun and shot his father twice. James was pronounced dead at the scene.
Evan placed a 911 call confessing to the shooting and saying he was distraught; police arrived shortly afterward and took him into custody. Court records referenced a prior history of domestic conflict, including a 2015 incident in which James pleaded no contest to battery after an altercation with Evan. Evan was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail, and a court attorney was appointed for his arraignment.
Neighbors described James as a loving, hardworking man devoted to family and community. What details about the lead-up to the altercation or the family dynamics would help explain how this dispute escalated to lethal violence?
