On the evening of November 11, 2018, 32-year-old Sonny Cunningham was shot and killed while getting into a car on Henry Street in Umatilla, Florida. Deputies arrived about 8:30 p.m.; Cunningham, a father of twin girls, was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, Freda Cunningham, was critically injured and airlifted to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford and survived, but was unable to provide useful information because the attack happened suddenly and in the dark.

Investigators recovered shell casings from at least two different caliber guns and believe there were at least two shooters. The inquiry produced some leads and a person of interest, Darius Kendal Austin, 37, who was himself fatally shot and found on a sidewalk in Eustis on December 1, 2018.

Both Cunningham and Austin had prior criminal histories that included drug-related charges, and investigators have not ruled out a possible drug-related motive, though no concrete evidence confirming that theory has been reported. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek tips from anyone who knows more about the shooting.
