Devante Carthers, 25, of Eustis, Florida, was killed in the early morning hours of May 28, 2018. Carthers’ body was later dumped along Jenny Lane in an unincorporated area of Eustis.

The Eustis Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation. A witness who had been in the vehicle provided information that led to Williams’ identification and arrest. Williams was found the same day with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his calf and was taken into custody at Central Florida Regional Hospital; he was charged with first-degree murder. The trial record includes eyewitness testimony from Williams’ girlfriend, who said he threatened her and forced her to help dispose of the body and clean the vehicle. Prosecutors did not present a definitive motive at trial.
