Deputy William Gentry, 40, was shot on May 6, 2018, in Lake Placid, Florida, after responding to a neighbor complaint about a cat. Assigned to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office and a member of the K-9 unit and Special Investigations Unit, he approached the home of 69-year-old Joseph Edward Ables when Ables shot him in the head. Gentry was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital and died of his injuries on May 7, 2018.

Ables was arrested at the scene and charged in connection with the shooting. Charges included homicide, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, resisting an officer with violence, tampering with evidence, and violation of probation; the homicide charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder. The community and the Sheriff’s Office mourned the loss of a deputy who had served for over eight years.
