Natasha McKinney, 34, was found dead in the bedroom of her Crestview, Florida home on April 15, 2018, lying on her back with a gunshot wound to her face. A black semi-automatic handgun was discovered near her head and a cell phone was near her feet. She lived at the residence with her husband, Derek McKinney, and their teenage daughter.
Derek McKinney, 32, a sergeant in the U.S. Army 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), called 911, identified himself as the shooter and said he was giving CPR. Officers found him at the scene with blood on his tank top and took him into custody without incident. He was charged with second-degree murder, initially held without bond and later released on a $35,000 bond. He entered a not guilty plea on April 20, 2018, and a trial was scheduled for July 2018.
The motive remained unclear and Natasha’s sister, Dawn Minor, publicly urged that justice be served. This was reported as the first murder within Crestview city limits that year. Does anyone have information about Natasha’s life in Crestview or details that could help clarify what happened that night?
