Trent Bartol-Thomas was 19 when he was shot and killed on January 10, 2018, on Porto Chico Avenue in North Port. Officers found him with fatal injuries; he died at the scene. The shooting unsettled the Sarasota and North Port communities and prompted a major police inquiry.

The North Port Police Department’s investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Dontae Lamar Stanley Jr., who was listed as homeless at the time. Stanley was charged with murder, armed home invasion, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after investigators tied evidence and witness statements to his alleged involvement in the shooting.
