Kevin Carter, 51, was shot to death during a robbery at the Zota Beach Resort in Longboat Key, Florida, on August 4, 2017. Carter was working as a security guard for Victory Security and was on duty with night desk manager Timothy Hurley when both men were fatally shot in the early morning hours. The robbery took about $900.
A former part-time resort security guard, Darryl Hanna Jr., was arrested on August 9, 2017 and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of armed robbery. While in custody he suffered a stroke-like event that left him in a vegetative state and he was released to receive medical care; he later died. The victims were remembered by family and community members for their devotion to loved ones — Carter described as a 6 feet 5 inches gentle presence and Hurley noted for supporting his family.
In January 2024 a second person, Latoya Hanna, was arrested and charged with felony murder in connection with the same killings. The families have also pursued a wrongful death lawsuit against Zota Beach Resort and Victory Security Agency alleging preventable negligence. Does anyone have information about the night of August 4, 2017, or about the people involved?
