Janine Ackerman, 35, was killed in a workplace shooting at the Equinox gym in Merrick Park, Coral Gables, on April 8, 2017. Ackerman was the gym’s general manager; the gunman, 33-year-old former employee Abeku Wilson, entered the facility with a handgun after being dismissed earlier that day and targeted managers in the back office area.

Reports say Wilson had been fired for workplace violence and was escorted off the premises after the dismissal, but returned and went directly to where Ackerman and another manager, Marios Hortis, were located. Witnesses described panic and an immediate evacuation when the shooting began. The Miami-Dade Police Department investigated and determined Wilson acted alone and the attack was deliberate.

Ackerman is remembered by the community and gym members for her work in the hospitality and fitness industries. If anyone was at Equinox that day or has information about what happened before the shooting, please share what you know.
